Professional Guidance Notes The Letter of Appointment The Letter of Appointment should include reference to a Schedule of Services offered by the Designer and any other third party services required by the Designer to fulfil the design brief issued by the Client. Clear reference should also be made to the calculation, charging and payment of both fees and additional expenses. Two copies of the Letter of Appointment should be sent to the Client, one copy to be retained by the Client and the other to be signed and returned in acknowledgement of the proposed fee scales. A Schedule of Services The intention of a Schedule of Services is to provide an easily comprehensible itinerary of the services offered by the Designer either by itemised functions, actions and design features or by illustration of technologies. This Schedule and the language used within it should be carefully considered to protect first-time clients from the risk of misinterpretation of terms included in this document. The Designer is often multi-disciplined and may be able to provide a wide palette of other services such as multimedia brochure design, 3D rendering, presentations, graphic design or animations. A brief list of these services with summary descriptions should be included in the schedule of services to enable the client to co-ordinate cross-media projects within one design house if desired. Fee rates in respect to these items should also be outlined in the Letter of Appointment should the Client wish to draw upon them at any time. Fees Fees are usually quoted in one of three ways. As a lump sum quotation for a project as a response to a specific design brief. On an hourly or daily rate together with an estimate of the time the project will take. On a per page or per template page basis together with a basic site skeleton indicating the approximate page requirements Fees are a matter of mutual agreement - there are no set fee scales. A project may have different fee rates for different aspects of the design as a whole dependant on the particular disciplines employed.
